# Manage DNS records

Add, edit, and remove DNS records from the domain’s Overview in the Dashio Admin Portal.

## Before you begin

Select the Space that owns the domain. Open **Admin Portal → Domains**, select the domain, and stay on **Overview**. Find **DNS Records → Manage DNS entries**.

Check that the domain uses the DNS provider managed by Dashio. When nameservers are managed elsewhere, the page shows a warning; changing the Dashio zone alone will not change the public DNS answers. Some nameserver configurations block record changes until the configuration is corrected.

Keep the DNS instructions from your website, email, or verification provider nearby. They must supply the required record type, name, and value.

## Add a record

1. Select **Add record** in the DNS record section.
2. Choose the record type. The common choices include A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, CAA, and SRV. Turn on the advanced choices only when your provider asks for an additional type.
3. Select **Continue** to open the fields for that type.
4. Enter the name and the type-specific values supplied by your provider. Choose a TTL and add an optional internal comment.
5. Select **Add record**. Correct any validation message before saving, then confirm the record appears in the list.

The form changes with the record type. An A record needs an IPv4 address; an AAAA record needs an IPv6 address; a CNAME needs a target hostname. An MX record needs a mail server and priority. A TXT record needs the exact text from the service you are verifying.

## Understand the fields

| Field | What to enter |
| --- | --- |
| Type | The record type requested by the service. |
| Name | The hostname or label requested by the service; follow the form’s example for the root domain. |
| Value | An address, hostname, or text value appropriate to the chosen type. |
| TTL | How long resolvers may cache the record, in seconds. |
| Priority | For record types such as MX, the priority specified by the mail provider. |
| Comment | An internal note. This is not published in DNS. |

For example, to point `www` to a server, your provider might request an A record with the value `192.0.2.10`. That address is reserved for documentation: replace it with the actual address supplied by your provider.

## Edit or remove a record

Use the record’s actions to edit it, review the existing values, and save the updated fields. After saving, check the list again.

Use the delete action only after checking what depends on the record. Removing an MX record can interrupt incoming email; removing a verification TXT record can affect the service that checks it. Keep a copy of the previous values so you can restore them if necessary.

## Check the result

Check the name with your provider’s verification tool or a DNS lookup. Confirm that the lookup asks the domain’s current authoritative nameservers. A lower TTL affects future caching; it does not immediately remove answers already cached with the previous TTL.

## Troubleshooting

**The form will not save:** inspect the record type and the highlighted fields. A hostname belongs in a hostname field, and an IP address belongs in an address field. For TXT records, preserve the provider’s text.

**The record exists in Dashio but the service cannot find it:** compare the domain’s nameservers with the DNS provider you intended to use. Then compare the queried hostname with the saved name and allow existing caches to expire.

**A nameserver warning appears:** read [Change nameservers](/guides/domains/nameservers) before adding more records. Editing a zone that is not authoritative will not connect the service.

For automation, use [the documented DNS record operations](/api/operations/listDomainRecords).
